Chatterton to release new EP

On Sept. 19, Oxnard, California, duo Chatterton will release “Tiny Empire,” the successor to last year’s “Fields Of This,” and their first body of work to be recorded in a professional studio.

Founding members Brock Pierce and Logan Scrivner teased the five-track EP earlier this month when they unveiled “Blouse,” the closing track to this carefully selected collection of songs.

"Once the arrangement was complete, it was pretty clear to me that ‘Blouse’ was the definitive closer,” said Scrivner. “It felt like a nice summation of all the tracks that we already knew would be included.”

Scrivner and Pierce explained that the EP was largely complete when “Blouse” was conceived, and they had to remove a song from the original track listing to make room for what would be the new lead single.

“I think it boiled down to us just not being able to agree on where it would fit in the track list,” said Pierce. “Our compromise just ended up being to include it as a bonus track on the vinyl pressing. That song in particular was also initially supposed to be the closing track of the EP, so once ‘Blouse’ materialized, it felt like they were competing for the same role.”

Chatterton structured the EP with a meaningful attention to detail, which extended to every aspect of their creative process — with dedicated studio time, “Tiny Empire” was more collaborative than previous works, an approach they’ve since applied to building their next album.

“It was cool to collaborate and write stuff as a unit,” said Pierce. “We still approach things how we used to, but I think letting my guard down has opened the door for a lot more collaboration.”

Out tomorrow via 7th Heaven Recordings, “Tiny Empire” is Scrivner and Pierce at their creative best and prefaces a new chapter in the band’s career with a concise, unified charm.

“The spontaneity has kept it really fresh,” said Scrivner. “It’s been fun exploring the boundaries and trying to push them. … We did it with our hearts on our sleeves.”
