JULESY

The largest U.S. city is flushed with talent. A microcosm of the country at large, it’s flushed with everything — the noise of personality and creation can be deafening at times. But it’s those who create with the precise combination of passion and indifference to reception who prosper. Brooklyn’s JULESY sees no alternative.

Her new album, “Flip The Bed,” is a product of this mindset, and each of its eight tracks come from a place of vulnerability and raw authenticity. The album comes Oct. 17, and last month, JULESY answered a few of my questions between the singles.

YY: As I understand it, songwriting enables you to work through life's challenges in a completely unique way, even if processing emotion isn't your immediate intention. Is there a specific time in your life when you came to this realization, or have you always had a therapeutic relationship with writing music?

J: I've always written this way, but I realized it more when I started sharing my music and people were asking me what certain songs were about. I liked to use my songs as little time capsules of where I'd been and how I'd been feeling, but I think having people connect with my songs made me more introspective about them. It's definitely always been therapeutic, cathartic and a way to release some things I didn't want to talk about yet.

"Heart On The Line" emerged from combining two complimentary songs. Did any other songs on the album have unusual beginnings?

“Missing Muse” began as a song I wrote on a dare to write a song in three minutes. I wrote the first couple lines and put it away, but when I was working on this album I realized that it was a song that needed to be on "Flip The Bed," so I sat down and finished it before bringing it to Sahil for production.

How do you see yourself fitting into the Brooklyn music scene, and how do you think it has contributed to your experience as a musician there?

There are so many artists here doing it all and making like nothing for it, its super inspiring. You have to have a determined and undeterred attitude about your passions in this city. That can be pretty devastating at times, and motivating at others. It's nice to have a community of people to look up to, who will support each other going to shows or helping with booking, and who share this love for an art form.

You collaborated with your band to record this album, to include your twin brother. How do you think those relationships helped bring these songs to life?

My band has been playing with me for around five years, and I've known everyone for at least 10. They know my intentions and my inspirations too, but they are so talented and are so individual in their own styles too, so they really just help me to make a better version of whatever I would write on my own. This collaboration has been so important to the formation of my sound and my music. Having my twin in the band, he can kind of finish my thoughts, but he has his own style too. I write my best songs with him.

What emotions are you feeling just weeks away from the release of your first album?

I'm super nervous obviously for everyone to hear something I've spent so much time and energy and love creating, but I'm much more excited to have it out in the world. Can’t wait to finally share it with people.

What's something you might want listeners to know before hearing "Flip The Bed" for the first time?

Listen however you like to listen to music best! I look to music and art to find connection and to feel less alone. I hope I can give some people that too.
